ITP, Immune Thrombocytopenia Perpura or Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Perpura, is an Autoimmune Disease in which the platelets have become the target of attack from the body itself. This process removes and/or reduces the platelets from the circulation of the body, and therefore interferes with the ability of the blood to coagulate and to stop bleeding from occurring.
ITP is a relatively rare disorder about which little is known. From origins, and causes of ITP, to which treatments will work best, the recommendations can be confusing and upsetting. It is for this reason that support and education are very important tools.
People with Autoimmune Disorders such as these and others, are faced with challenges of any other life threatening illness. There are uncertain life situations and difficult treatment choices. Being with others in the same situation can be very helpful, comforting and reassuring.
I have a group which meets on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-10:45 am. Call with any questions and to talk about joining the group. 703-608-0180.
